Tortitas de Camaron are crispy little shrimp balls served as an appetizer or snack in Mexican cuisine. Theyโ€™re usually sold at street stalls and traditional markets, but making them at home couldnโ€™t be easier! Tortitas de Camaron are made with basic ingredients that you probably already have on hand, and theyโ€™re ready in just 20 minutes!

Overview: Tortitas de camaron

Tortitas are delicious bite-sized empanadas stuffed with shrimp and spices. The best part about them is that theyโ€™re fried, meaning theyโ€™re soft on the inside and crisp on the outside. If youโ€™ve never had tortitas before, you can think of them as mini shrimp tacos that are served cold instead of hot.

Tortillas de camarones are shrimp fritters from the province of Cรกdiz in Andalusia. They’re made using a batter that includes wheat flour, chickpea flour, water, onion (shallot or scallion), parsley, shrimp, salt, and pepper. The batter is then fried on both sides in a skillet with plenty of olive oil. It’s frequently accompanied with a few small side dishes.

During Lent, fried dried shrimp pancakes with beaten eggs are served in various parts of the country. Later in Chihuahua, Coahuila, and Nuevo Leรณn, the egg whites are whisked to include the yolks with crushed dry shrimp; they are fried in small pancakes and added to the nopales in chile colorado. They’re created in Jalisco with ground dried shrimp, corn dough, cilantro, and strips of nopales in a red chile, garlic, and cumin sauce.

In Oaxaca, they’re cooked with pulverized dried shrimp and maize flour, then battered and served in a broth with ancho and guajillo chiles, cloves, garlic, tomato, and miltomate, as well as strips of nopalitos. Juchitรกn also includes eggs, shrimp, corn bread, lard, tomato, achiote, epazote, pumpkin seed, and green chile. Pancakes are made from the dough, which are then baked. Gueta bi’ngui’ is another name for them, and in some parts of Oaxaca, they’re also known as shrimp sandwiches.

How to make Tortitas de camaron, endnote

Tortitas de Camaron are basically fried shrimp cakes and one of my favorite dishes to make in the summer when itโ€™s hot outside. They are so easy to make too! Just be sure you have all the ingredients ready because they fry up quick and you donโ€™t want them to get cold while you chop the onion or measure out the spices and breadcrumbs

You can take a traditional Mexican dish and make it healthy by swapping some of your favorite ingredients for healthier options. The end result is still absolutely delicious, and you feel great about yourself because you didnโ€™t just throw away all of your dietary goals in exchange for fried food.

Because tortitas are made with corn or wheat tortillas, they will still have that classic flavor. It might take a little extra time to figure out how to make tortitas from scratch, but itโ€™s well worth it in the end. If you are planning to try out this new recipe tonight, good luck and enjoy!
