Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney must ignite transfer battle with Birmingham for 58-goal star
The Red Dragons secured promotion to the third tier in the 2023/24 season, while Birmingham City were relegated from the Championship.
Despite the huge gulf in league positions between the two sides just one year ago, they are now entwined in a hotly contested promotion race.
After Wrexham dropped points over the weekend, Birmingham have leapfrogged them in the table and now sit second – one point above the Welsh team with two games in hand.
Backed by former NFL star Tom Brady, the Blues spent big over the summer, including splashing out £20m on just one player.
Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have already been told why Wrexham won’t win League One this season, with Birmingham instead tipped to do so.
The rivalry extends off the pitch as well, with McElhenney and Brady exchanging words prior to their teams meeting earlier this season.
Birmingham ended up winning that watch 3-1, with League One’s record signing Jay Stansfield scoring twice.
The two sides will look horns once more on January 23rd, with the result of that match likely to have big implications on the promotion race.
Before that, however, Wrexham should be looking to rival the Brady-backed club in the transfer market.
Recent reports have claimed that Birmingham want to sign Nathan Redmond from Burnley in the January transfer window.
The 30-year-old has been hampered by injury issues this term but is a Premier League-proven attacker with 58 goals and 64 assists notched across his career.
Birmingham landing a player of Redmond’s quality would boost their already high promotion chances massively and Reynolds and McElhenney should now try to ignite a transfer battle with their League One rival for the forward’s signature.
As well as dealing a blow to a promotion rival, Wrexham signing Remond ahead of Birmingham could help the club in several ways.
The Englishman is a natural right winger and has previously operated as a wing-back, meaning he would be an excellent rotation option for Ryan Barnett.
Barnett has been immense in 2024/25 so far but he cannot play every single match and the options behind him right now are nowhere near as good.
Remond’s versatility has also seen him play as a striker, as a number 10, and on the left wing.
This means Wrexham would be getting potential cover for all of Elliot Lee, Paul Mullin, and James McClean.
