Wolves fans will fear the worst as unpopular manager now of ‘real interest’ at Molineux
Once Wolves tasted their third defeat in a row on Monday, losing 2-1 against West Ham, the fans saw no way back for Gary O’Neil.
Yet, O’Neil is now set to be in charge against Ipswich on Saturday after receiving the vote of confidence from Fosun to carry on.
That being said, Wolves are eyeing replacements for O’Neil but have found it increasingly difficult to attract a reputable manager given the constraints of working under Fosun.
Five managers have rejected the Wolves managerial job already, including title-winning head coach Massimiliano Allegri and former Chelsea boss Graham Potter.
It leaves supporters in the dark over who’s going to succeed O’Neil, with one name now emerging as a genuine contender.
With the 41-year-old under increasing pressure in the dugout, it was reported last month that David Moyes and Rob Edwards were two figures being considered by Wolves.
Rob Edwards, the manager of Luton Town, is of “real interest” to the Old Gold, according to sources close to Molineux News, even though Moyes does not want to work for the Fosun company.
Edwards, who made over 111 appearances for Wolves as a centre-back between 2004 and 2008, has also worked under sporting director Matt Hobbs as an under-23s coach at Molineux.
The Englishman oversaw the development of several youngsters, including former captain Max Kilman, who Wolves sold to West Ham for £40 million in the summer.
Since emerging from Wolverhampton with a burgeoning reputation for improving young players, Edwards has made a name for himself as manager of Luton.
In his first season in charge, he achieved promotion to the Premier League before suffering an immediate relegation back to the second tier.
Now, his Luton side are currently loitering in the lower half of the Championship table, with Wolves fans rightfully questioning links to the 41-year-old.
So far, we’ve learnt that Wolves aren’t going to be spoilt for choice when finding a new manager to take over from O’Neil.
Their situation at the bottom of the table, coupled with the difficulties of working under Fosun make it a less than attractive job to take.
In the case of Edwards, he would likely snap their hands off for the role, having played and coached at Wolverhampton previously.
That being said, Wolves want a manager with Premier League experience. Edwards’ only campaign in the top-flight ended in relegation.
Admittedly, it was with Luton, but if the club are considering the Hatters boss as a genuine candidate, they’re better off sticking with O’Neil.
