Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach reveal difficulties behind their EPL failure.
The losing streak now stands at five straight. What did we discover after Wolves were devastated by Manchester City?
Gary O’Neil had a plenty to think about as the defending champions left Molineux with a contentious win.
Even though his team put up a strong showing, Wolves still sit at the bottom of the Premier League standings following their worst-ever start to a season.
Following eight depressing games, Wolves have more favorable games to look forward to, which should boost the team’s spirits.
Jose Sa is still at Wolves.
It was widely assumed that Jose Sa’s tenure as Gary O’Neil’s number one was finished after Sam Johnstone arrived in the summer.
But even though Sunday’s late goal caused some debate about Bernardo Silva’s position in front of Sa and his participation in the game, the Portuguese goalkeeper gave Wolves an outstanding performance in goal.
Even though O’Neil’s remarks support Johnstone keeping his starting position when he returns, Sa’s performance was more than enough to raise the possibility of future selection issues.
The 31-year-old’s performance against Manchester City has helped him regain some of the rapport he once had with Wolves fans after a challenging start to the season.
The person in charge of the line is Jørgen Strand Larsen.
Despite occasionally receiving little assistance, Jørgen Strand Larsen scored his third goal of the season and is still doing a good job leading Wolves’ line.
After a superb pass from Nelson Semedo, Larsen made no mistake in tapping the ball in from inside the area to give the Norweigan the lead in the seventh minute.
In the final third, Larsen is giving Wolves fans a welcome change after a spell without a natural presence in the box.
Larsen continues to show that he is the man to lead Wolves’ line and that he can cause difficulties for opposing defenses, even though Wolves were not the most active offensively against the champions.
Bueno gaining his position
After making an impression with Uruguay during the last international break, Santiago Bueno is now starting to establish himself as a regular for Wolves, especially with Yerson Mosquera sidelined for the remainder of the season and Gary O’Neil switching to a back three.
Since joining from Girona in the summer of 2023, the 25-year-old has had difficulty securing a consistent spot; nevertheless, his recent performance suggests that the Uruguayan will soon be among the first names on Wolves’ roster in O’Neil’s back three.
With his outstanding ball out wide to Nelson Semedo, Bueno, who is cool and collected when handling the ball, had a significant impact against Manchester City. As a result, Strand Larson gave the Old Gold the lead.
The back three is essential.
There may be legitimate concerns about why it took so long to switch back to the three-man defense that has worked well for Wolves in recent years, and some fans may question why the system change occurred in the first place, depending on how the season plays out and how long O’Neil stays at Molineux.
Although O’Neil downplayed the significance of formations, it was refreshing to watch Wolves play in a manner that had produced success for the majority of his 2023–24 first season before late-stage injuries interrupted it. The old system has now been restored.
For instance, Craig Dawson was dependable as always. The seasoned behemoth seemed to be much more productive when he was backed up by other center-backs, which allowed him to stay in the middle areas where he is best at winning headers and tackles.
