Wakefield Trinity show ambition again, signing from Super League leaders

Wakefield Trinity have continued their exciting recruitment for next year with the addition of a player from high-flying Hull KR.

After agreeing to a three-year contract that would keep him at the DIY Kitchens Stadium until the end of the 2027 campaign, forward Matty Storton will begin playing for the team at the beginning of 2019.

Storton, who is 25 years old, has a wealth of experience having started and played for the Bradford Bulls as well as Hull KR, totaling over 100 matches.

He was a part of Rovers’ ascent to become legitimate Super League contenders and played for the team in the 2023 Challenge Cup final, which they lost to Leigh Leopards.

Having come through Bradford’s academy system, Storton is as comfortable playing in the front or back row. In 2017, as a teenager, he earned his team debut.

The Keighley-born player relocated to East Yorkshire and Hull KR in 2020, and against Trinity in the first round of that season, he made his Super League debut.

Although Storton has made 17 appearances for the Robins this season, who are presently leading the Super League, he is eager to return to his home state of West Yorkshire come the 2025 season.

“I’m thrilled to sign at Wakefield for the next three years; the team is doing amazing things both on and off the field, and I can’t wait to get going,” he exclaimed.

Daryl Powell, the head coach of Trinity, is thrilled to have Matty join a team that is heavily preparing for the upcoming campaign.

“As a coach, I have tried to sign him before because I love what he brings to a team,” he clarified.

His ability to play in the middle unit and the back row gives our squad tremendous versatility, and his enthusiasm is contagious. I’m eager to watch him develop to his full potential in our setting.

“Matty will be a great addition to Wakefield Trinity,” said Ste Mills, recruitment manager for Trinity. Having known Matty for a while, I am confident that our atmosphere will catch on to his contagious attitude.

He can play in the back row and is an aggressive ball carrier and defender who appreciates all the small details and effort areas in his game. On the field, he will be a fantastic asset to our middle unit.

“Therefore, I am confident that he will be a tremendous success and a fan and team favorite.”
