Wakefield sign Storton for 2025 onwards with Peters saying he will miss ‘champion person’

Forward Matty Storton of Hull Kingston Rovers will sign a three-year contract with Wakefield Trinity beginning in 2025 after leaving the team at the end of the 2024 campaign.

The news that Wakefield was lining up Storton was first reported by Rugby League Live in March, and both clubs confirmed the deal on Friday night. Having joined the club prior to the 2020 campaign, Storton has made 97 appearances for the red and whites. He participated for Rovers in the 2023 Challenge Cup final, however they lost to Leigh Leopards.

“I’d like to thank the club, and the fans, for the past five seasons,” stated 25-year-old Storton, who has made 17 appearances for Hull KR this season. It’s been an amazing adventure, and I’m honored to have contributed to the club’s current state, which has come a long way from when I signed.

“There’s still a massive job ahead though and I’m fully committed to keep pushing towards the end of the season, and a chance to achieve something special with this great club.”

Willie Peters, head coach of Hull KR, stated: “Matty is a champion individual; our club will miss him greatly. Although he has contributed significantly to our efforts this year, I know Matty still has a lot to offer and wants to end his career on a positive way.

After going through the Bradford Bulls system and playing for their first team before joining Hull KR, Storton really made his Super League debut for the Robins against Wakefield in 2020. Tony Smith’s team won 30–12 at home in the first round of the league, and Storton started in the second row.

Daryl Powell, the head coach of Wakefield, stated, “We are thrilled to have Matty join our team for the upcoming season and beyond.” I’ve attempted to sign him in the past as a coach because I adore the addition he makes to a squad. His enthusiasm is contagious, and his versatility as a back row and middle unit player enhances our team. I’m eager to watch him develop to his full potential in our setting.

Wakefield Trinity’s recruitment manager, Ste Mills, stated: “Matty will be a great addition.” Having known Matty for a while, I am confident that our atmosphere will catch on to his contagious attitude. He can play in the back row and will be a fantastic asset to our middle unit on the field. He is a fierce ball handler and defender who places a high importance on all the small nuances and areas of effort in his play. Thus, I am confident that he will be a big hit and a fan and team favorite. Anticipating Matty’s arrival for 2025 and beyond.
