VAR actually made a serious mistake during West Ham 1-1 Brighton?
Brighton had some excellent chances to take all three points away from West Ham, and Lukasz Fabianski had to pull off one or two remarkable saves to cling onto a draw.
After three games without a loss, the Hammers have already somewhat recovered from their previous storm, but Julen Lopetegui will still need to motivate his team more.
West Ham has some really difficult games ahead of them during the holiday season, and their management will not tolerate any slip-ups.
Nevertheless, following Saturday’s 1-1 draw, some home fans might still feel resentful of referee Rob Jones and VAR.
In the 84th minute of the game, Brighton full-back Pervis Estupinan was instantly handed a yellow card by Jones for a foul on Max Kilman.
Jones was very close to the foul in the middle of the pitch, one that left Kilman in a lot of pain.
With both feet up, Estupinan slid in to win the ball and made significant impact with Kilman’s left shin, causing his shin pad to bounce dramatically.
VAR examined the situation as was to be expected, but it was unexpected when they decided that Jones’ decision didn’t require an on-field review and instead settled on a yellow card.
Kilman was lucky not to be hurt by Estupinan’s tackle, which seemed careless, mistimed, and quite dangerous in actuality.
In a complete surprise, VAR determined there was insufficient justification to alter the call after Jones promptly determined it was a yellow card foul.
Jones’ call was not judged to be “clearly and obviously wrong” after VAR looked for a possible red card.
They wrote: “Estupiñán was given a yellow card by the referee for challenging Kilman.
“VAR determined that the referee’s call was not blatantly incorrect after looking for a possible red card.”
It’s difficult to criticize Jones in this situation because, while being so close to the challenge, he did have a slightly obscured vision.
However, this appeared to be the precise circumstance for which VAR is available, and Jones would have benefited from some assistance.
Estupinan made a mistake this time and ought to have been going down the tunnel, but nobody likes to see players sent off.
