Following his death on July 18 in Newmarket while riding a motorcycle, a man from Richmond Hill is being remembered.
Younus Imam posted on Facebook that the biker who lost his life in the Leslie Street crash with the SUV was Dr. Salman Anwar. As of July 22, more than $10,000 had been contributed by the family in his honor to help construct water wells abroad.
LaunchGood.com is a Muslim-focused crowdfunding platform. The ad states that “all funds collected will go directly towards the construction of water wells in a country that desperately needs access to clean water, so that Salman continues to receive rewards and blessings in the hereafter.”
York Regional Police are currently investigating the collision, in which Anwar, 31, was declared dead at the scene.
Anwar was employed at Newmarket Rheumatology Consultants Inc., which announced on its website that he had died in a car accident.
“His patients and colleagues will remember him as a kind, compassionate, hard-working, and dedicated physician,” the multidisciplinary clinic stated. “Dr. Anwar was renowned for his constant sense of humor and upbeat demeanor. He had a remarkable capacity for making everyone around him smile and feel happy.
Anwar was born and raised in Richmond Hill. He completed his rheumatology fellowship at the University of Manitoba after receiving his internal medical training at the University of Saskatchewan. According to the Newmarket Rheumatology Consultants, Anwar’s interests outside of work include computers, technology, indoor gardening, skiing, and mountain biking.
Anwar leaves behind his spouse and their one-year-old son.
Imam posted on Facebook, “He was close friends with many people in both York Region and Saskatchewan, where he studied medicine.”
