Tigers offense skipped the final game of the series

A question for the ages: if the club is only relocating to a different stadium within the same city, is it still considered “getaway day”? Ponder that while I dissect this comparatively awful game that is only marginally ameliorated by Dan Dickerson’s appearance in the TV booth.

Justin Steele was starting for the Cubs, and the Tigers were back to using their bullpen, with Tyler Holton starting the game and Kenta Maeda covering the majority of the innings.

Matt Vierling led off the first inning with a single, but after three outs, he was left stranded. Similarly, the Cubs lost in sequence in the home half.

In the top of the second, the Tigers went 1-2-3. Seiya Suzuki scored a leadoff single off of Kenta Maeda, who relieved Tyler Holton in the bottom of the inning. Après a single by Nico Hoerner with one out, Dansby Swanson advanced the runners to safety. With two outs, Miguel Amaya cleared the bases with a grand slam to give the Cubs a 4-0 lead. The Cubs failed to score any more runs, despite Ian Happ drawing a walk.

The Tigers went three-up, three-down in the third. For the Cubs, Cody Bellinger opened with a double and was walked by Suzuki. Then Michael Busch singled to bring the bases back to full. Bellinger scored on a groundout by Nico Hoerner. The Cubs managed just one score, even though Dansby Swanson did steal second base and reach on a fielder’s choice.

Colt In the top of the fourth, Keith singled with one out, but the inning ended shortly when he was hit by a double play. In the home half, Ian Happ doubled with one out and Cody Bellinger singled with two outs to bring Happy home as the Cubs continued to dominate Maeda. By the end of, the Cubs were ahead 6-0 in at the conclusion of four.

In the top of the fifth, the Tigers once more went 1-2-3. Thankfully, the Cubs followed suit in the bottom of the inning.

Another three-up, three-down situation occurred in the sixth. Miguel Amaya singled with one out in the second half, but no runs were scored.

Colt In the top of the eighth, Keith scored himself another one-out single, and this time it was a hit. The Tigers took the lead thanks to a two-run home drive by Spencer Torkelson.

Joey Wentz took over when Maeda’s day was over. Following a two-out walk to Michael Busch, Hoerner and Swanson each had a consecutive single; Swanson’s single allowed Busch to score. Next, Hoerner pilfered second. After that, Pete Crow-Armstrong doubled to score two more runs. Amaya singled, and although she was first called out at the plate, the Cubs won the review, and Crow-Armstrong also scored. Ten to two was the score after seven innings.

In the eighth, Justin Steele was replaced by Ethan Roberts. Javier Baez did manage a single, but there were no runs scored. The Tigers’ next reliever, Sean Guenther, worked a perfect 1-2-3 inning.

With little to fear from the Tigers’ offense, Jack Neely entered the field for the top of the ninth inning. The game ended on a flyout, although Torkelson managed a walk with two outs.

Hello. They get to play the White Sox next, at least.
