  • 5 cups water
  • 1 cup uncooked long-grain white rice
  • 2 cinnamon sticks broken (see note 2)
  • 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Ice cubes
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • fresh crushed mint (optional)
  • sesame (optional)

Agua de Horchata recipe step by step

  1. Combine the water, rice, and cinnamon sticks in a medium mixing bowl. Soak in the tub for 2 hours.
  2. Transfer to a blender and blend until smooth, with no visible whole grains of rice (do not remove the cinnamon sticks).
  3. Allow 3 to 7 hours in the refrigerator to steep. The longer you leave it, the creamier your horchata will become.
  4. To remove most or all of the pulp, strain through a fine-mesh strainer.
  5. Stir in the remaining 2 cups water, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla, and maple syrup. You can give it a quick blend to make sure everything is well combined.
