Southampton boss Russell Martin admits he’s been left ‘incredibly hurt and embarrassed’
With just five points from the current season—their lone victory came against Everton last month—the Saints remain at the bottom of the standings.
Martin feels his team should have more points if it weren’t for “a few too many mistakes.” They have drew two games and lost twelve, with a frustrating 1-0 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday.
He said: “We shouldn’t be on the points we are. It’s incredibly hurtful and embarrassing that we’re only on five points, we should have more. But there’s been a few too many mistakes, a few too many moments we haven’t managed well and disappointments in games and setbacks, so we have to keep trying to grow.
“Grow as a group, grow individually and prepare the players for those moments where it’s tough and what to do and find ways to cope and manage emotionally.”
Martin hopes he can assist Southampton “switch off” from the outside noise surrounding their performance when they play Tottenham on Sunday.
Martin continued, “It’s my responsibility to try and instill in the players the idea that they can have the same level of faith in themselves as I do in them and our work.”
They believe in what they’re doing, what they’re trying to be, or what they’re trying to do, so I don’t think they have any doubts when we talk and have candid talks.
“Obviously, points and victories aid in that. Eliminating outside noise is the most challenging task; sometimes it seems like we are the only ones telling them they are good enough.
We’re attempting to accomplish that as effectively as we can with our guys, which is turning that off, zooming in, and concentrating on what matters most.
