Rovers squad stretched by injury after just two games
After an injury-plagued start to the season, Nigel Adkins, the manager of Tranmere Rovers, is adamant that he will exercise caution when selecting his team for tomorrow lunchtime’s visit to Prenton Park by Walsall.
In their first two League Two matches, Rovers have drawn goallessly against Notts County and Port Vale, respectively.
In Tranmere’s EFL Trophy match against Everton under-21s on Tuesday night, Luke Norris suffered a hamstring injury at Vale Park last Saturday, and Zak Bradshaw was substituted with a knock at halftime.
In addition to Declan Drysdale (hamstring), Josh Hawkes, Sam Taylor, and Sam Finley, the two will be questionable for Saturday’s game.
Midweek saw the return of defender Jordan Turnbull from injury, but Adkins believes his team’s resiliency will help them get past their current injury problems.
Adkins told the media, “I have to manage the group of players without trying to lose any because some players are on the brink.”
“It does create a little issue for the weekend, as well as against Leicester City on Tuesday and at Carlisle after that. We lost a couple tonight (against Everton under-21s on Tuesday).
“But if you look at the first half performance (on Tuesday), I thought there was some really good football played there. We have a resilient group that is working really hard.”
Despite being one of just four League Two teams without a goal, Tranmere managed to start strong in the EFL Cup, defeating Accrington Stanley 3-0 last week thanks to goals from Harvey Saunders, Josh Williams, and Omari Patrick.
