QPR sent worrying update by ‘excellent’ ex Burnley and Sunderland Man
QPR defender Jimmy Dunne opened the scoring in the 3-0 win against Norwich City on Saturday afternoon but, as it stands, the 27-year-old is set to leave the club at the end of the 2024/25 season.
The former Burnley and Sunderland man has become a key part of Marti Cifuentes’ R’s side, converted into a physical full-back from his previous centre-back role. Dunne has played every minute of the difficult Championship season so far and remains one of the first names on the team sheet.
After finding himself among the goals against Norwich, Dunne admitted that he is yet to have talks with the club over a new contract with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season. The defender saw a 12-month extension triggered towards the end of the previous campaign.
He stated: “I haven’t had any conversations,” according to West London Sport. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. I haven’t given it much thought.
Having graduated from Manchester United and Burnley youth academies, Dunne went on to make just seven appearances for the Clarets with loan spells at Accrington Stanley, Hearts and Sunderland before joining QPR in 2021. He has since turned out 137 times for the R’s.
Speaking about the side’s progress this season, Dunne said: “I think the momentum has been building because the performances had been good and we deserved better results.
“We’ve played games where we’ve deserved three points. There’s just such fine margins. People forget we’re a new group and we’re still bonding relationships with players that have come in from all over Europe. It takes time but it looks like we’re getting there.”
Christian Nourry, the CEO of QPR, commended Dunne when the club activated the contract extension earlier this year. “It is a great pleasure to announce that the ‘Jimmy Dunne, QPR’ story continues,” the CEO stated.
“Jimmy has proven over the past six months that he has the courage and ability to take risks after assuming a right-back position and succeeding at it.
Jimmy is a credit to this club because of his contagious passion, big heart, and unwavering drive for greatness both on and off the training field.
