QPR mainstay makes contract talks revelation with deal expiring in 2025
The defender gained a healthy amount of senior experience on loans away from Turf Moor but the move to West London gave him a first real opportunity to be a regular starter at his permanent home.
Dunne has since become a mainstay for the R’s, be it at centre-back or right-back.
The 27-year-old has played every minute of Championship football this season, chopping in with two goals and an assist in 19 games to date. However, as it stands, the Irishman will be leaving for nothing next summer.
Dunne’s QPR contract is up at the end of the season and speaking after the huge win over Norwich City at the weekend, in which the defender scored, he revealed no talks have taken place over a new deal.
West London Sport cited him as saying:
“I haven’t spoken to anyone. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. I haven’t given it much thought.
A fresh agreement must be reached to keep Dunne at QPR, since an option to prolong his stay until 2025 was activated earlier this year.
Dunne may have split opinions with some of his performances for QPR this season, but he’s viewed as a valuable player by manager Marti Cifuentes and has come up with some valuable contributions in a season where success has been hard to come by.
He netted in Saturday’s win over Norwich, provided an assist for Zan Celar in the triumph against Cardiff City at the end of November, and scored in the 2-2 draw against Sheffield United in August. Alongside his defensive efforts, he’s played a key part in some of the limited joy Cifuentes and co have found.
As such, it’s perhaps a little surprising a more proactive approach hasn’t been taken to ensure Dunne stays beyond the end of this season.
But perhaps there are more important issues for Dunne and QPR to deal with.
The R’s are looking up after a rather disappointing campaign thus far, with seven points from the previous three games and a streak of four games without a loss. However, there is still a lot of work to be done, so maybe contracts have been put on hold for a while.
Many members of the board and the recruitment team will be attempting to find players who can assist them stay in the Championship as January approaches.
Regardless, it will be hoped Dunne can pen a new deal before the campaign’s end.
