A Double decker bus smashed into a tree just before 10:40 am on Moorland Drive, close to the junction with Harrogate Road, in the Moortown area of the city.
The 17 passengers died at the scene from life threatening injuries and 20 others in the bus during the fatal crash were rushed to hospital.

The conditions of the 16-year-old boy and two men aged 21 and 22 are not life-threatening.
Liaison officers are supporting the families of all those involved in the crash and an investigation was launched.
It’s thought traffic officers spotted the vehicle just moments earlier and there was a short pursuit, according to North Yorkshire Police.
Members of the public are thanked for their patience and understanding following an incident that has caused significant disruption.
