Leeds Rhinos leader explains pre-season change that Brad Arthur has overseen
As the former Parramatta Eels manager looks to become his team more fit and physical by 2025, Smith disclosed that the intensity has increased during coach Brad Arthur’s first winter with the Rhinos.
Smith stated, “We’ve done way more collision than we would have done before,” in reference to the training that started last month.
The intensity is higher and I’d say it is definitely one of the toughest [pre-seasons] I’ve done.”
Rhinos are on the back of successive eighth-placed finishes in the Betfred Super League and Smith insisted: “That was what we needed, [Arthur] recognised we need a bit more, he has implemented that and the boys have reacted well.
“We are working very hard. It’s certainly what we needed and it has been good.
“It has been fun – difficult, but you gain confidence through working hard and we are certainly being put through our paces.
Everybody has settled in and I think we have got a really exciting squad. It’s a new year, new team, but I think we’ve got the depth and quality we need.”
Rhinos begin their pre-season campaign when Wakefield Trinity visit AMT Headingley on Boxing Day.
Smith said: “It’s a chance for the boys to get some minutes in their legs and a bit of contact, but we are putting a decent emphasis on it and the boys are excited to play.”
Brad Arthur has selected a very strong side although plans have already been derailed with young full-back Alfie Edgell ruled out and set to be sidelined for an undetermined period after fracturing his jaw in what has been described as a ‘freak accident’.
