Ipswich Town open talks to sign West Brom mainstay

According to a recent TWTD story, Ipswich Town is in talks to recruit West Brom left-back Conor Townsend.
At the end of the previous season, Ipswich Town waved adieu to the Championship after earning an unexpected second straight promotion to the Premier League. Although they were also contenders, West Brom lost in the play-offs.

The Tractor Boys have mostly hired people from within the country; some of their best players have come from raiding the second division. Burnley’s Arijanet Muric has joined as goalkeeper, and Hull City’s Jacob Greaves has also relocated to Portman Road.

Ipswich Town is reportedly considering a move to acquire West Brom’s left-back Conor Townsend, according to TWTD.

According to reports, Kieran McKenna is looking for a different left-handed defensive alternative, and the Baggies’ Townsend is someone the team is “working on” bringing it.

The 31-year-old Townsend joined The Hawthorns in the summer of 2018 after leaving Scunthorpe United.

Although he has been a fixture for West Brom, his six-year tenure in the midlands may be coming to an end with one year remaining on his contract and a Premier League transfer with Ipswich Town imminent.

Townsend spent time with Hull City and had several loan stints with teams including Grimsby Town, Chesterfield, and Scunthorpe United before settling down and becoming well-known for the Iron.

Because of that, he was promoted to West Brom in 2018 and has been a consistent player ever since.

Townsend has made a significant contribution to the Baggies, appearing in 213 games and providing 15 assists in addition to four goals. He has played left back and wing back, occasionally even substituting on the left side of a back three.

The Hessle-born defender has participated in Premier League play at The Hawthorns, but as his contract nears its end, it’s possible that he’ll be forced to leave the team.

If Townsend is not bound by new terms in 2025, a move to Ipswich Town may be the last opportunity West Brom has to secure a price for him.

Townsend’s departure from West Brom might indicate that two new left backs are being considered for the team.

Although it may already be necessary, there won’t be any obvious candidates to take over in that position should the usual starter go. Although he can play there, Torbjorn Heggem is primarily a left-sided center back.

Ideally, someone would enter the building before Townsend leaves. As rumors about exits at West Brom keep surface, it remains to be seen if these discussions with Ipswich Town turn into a deal.
