I felt Newport County was the right move for me

Newport County’s first loan signing of the season, Kieron Evans, is looking forward to making his mark in league football on a regular basis after the short switch from neighbouring Cardiff City.

The 22-year-old saw his new teammates at training this morning before Saturday’s League Two matchup at home against Accrington Stanley (3pm), where he inked a season-long loan deal at Rodney Parade.

After two successful loan stints at Linfield, Torquay, and Gateshead, Evans feels that a move to Newport County and League Two is the next logical step in a career that has already garnered him a lot of praise.

Evans, who scored for Gateshead against Solihull in the FA Trophy final last season at Wembley via penalty shootout, said, “I needed to play league football this season to continue my development.”

“I received multiple offers from Football League teams, but as I only live in the area’s St Mellons, I thought moving to Newport County was the best choice for me.

Above all, though, I think my style of play will work well with the football style. This season has a different ethos than the previous, and I am eager to leave my imprint.

After spending the last twelve years at Cardiff, Evans is eager to reunite with former Bluebird Cameron Antwi and make a name for himself in Nelson Jardim’s young squad.

Evans, a versatile and aggressive midfielder who feels he can play either in midfield or up forward, made an appearance for the Bluebirds earlier this month in their Carabao Cup victory over Bristol Rovers.

“My first priority will be to find a chance to play,” the former Wales Under-20 international continued. “After that, I want to try to contribute goals and assists to the team’s best possible finish.”

The 22-year-old, who just inked a new deal with the Bluebirds, began his career at the academy at the under-8 level. On September 12, 2021, he made his club debut during a 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest.

Evans spent the latter part of the 2023–24 season at Gateshead, where he won the FA Trophy at Wembley, after earlier gaining experience on loan at Linfield and Torquay United.

Evans, a dynamic and offensive midfielder, will improve Nelson Jardim’s attacking options in the closing third. Evans most recently played for the Bluebirds in their Carabao Cup victory over Bristol Rovers earlier this month.

Evans is going to sport a number 17 shirt.

He put pen to paper and declared, “I’m delighted to be joining the club.”

Football League teams made me a number of offers, but I decided that moving to Newport County was the best option for me.

“I think my game will work well with the football approach. This season has a different ethos than the previous, and I am eager to leave my imprint.

Kieron, welcome to the Exiles!
