Glasgow family with newborn baby ‘left with nothing’ after massive fire

Mum Deborah Ameh was woken by her fire alarm after the blaze broke out in her rented house on Forge Street in the Germiston area of Glasgow at around 6.30am on Wednesday, October 2.

A terrible fire destroyed a Glasgow family’s house, leaving them with nothing and a newborn and small toddler.

On Wednesday, October 2, at around 6.30 a.m., a fire broke out in Deborah Ameh’s leased home on Forge Street in the Germiston neighbourhood of Glasgow. Deborah Ameh was awakened by her fire alarm. The mother of two was shocked to see her living room on fire as she hurried downstairs to make sure her two kids, one who was five years old and the other who was five months old, were safe.

The Daily Record reports the mum, alongside her husband, Possible Aguebor, and their two children have been left “with nothing”.

The 34-year-old said: “All of our belongings, from my furniture, clothes, books, shoes and even sentimental pictures, have been destroyed. Everything is either burnt or covered in smoke. We’ve gone back and there is nothing left, everything is destroyed.

“Apart from my passport , everything else has been burnt. It has been devastating but I am so grateful that my children and grandma are safe and well, it could have been a very different story. I’m thanking god that we are all well and that nobody died.”

Speaking of the moment she discovered the blaze, Deborah told the Record: “I suddenly woke up at around 6.30am to the fire alarm going off. I quickly got out of bed and checked the upstairs room before I went downstairs.

“As I got down, my whole living room was on fire. By the time I got there, the fire had already gripped the house and most of my furniture was burning. It was scary because my grandma and my two young children were in the house at the time. I quickly got them together and we got out.”

After quickly getting out of the property, the family watched on as the inferno engulfed their home before Deborah was rushed to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment to smoke inhalation.

Deborah continued: “After we got out, the fire spread to the rest of the house within minutes. The widows blew out and the doors were falling, we could see the flames gripping the whole building, it all happened very quickly.

“I was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, where I gave a few blood tests before being released again. It was scary and I was shaken, but I am okay now.”

Shocking footage shows the smouldering aftermath of the property, which has been left completely destroyed by the blaze. The living room has been left gutted after walls and ceilings collapsed during the inferno.

Wallpaper has been pictured peeling away from the walls while the upstairs bedrooms have been left charred. Thick, black sheets of smoke can also be seen plastered across the beds, walls and floors.

In the meantime, Deborah and her family are temporarily living in an Airbnb until they can find a new home.

A GoFundMe has since been set up by Deborah’s neighbours to help the family get back on their feet.
