Fulham confirm Spanish defender as third summer addition to Marco Silva's side
Jorge Cuenca, a defender from Spain, has officially joined Fulham from Villarreal.
After leaving Tottenham Hotspur, Ryan Sessegnon returned to the club on a free transfer, and the Cottagers started their transfer business with his addition.
After agreeing to a club-record contract with Arsenal, Fulham confirmed the arrival of midfielder Emile Smith Rowe on Friday.
Following the addition of Smith Rowe, Fulham has now officially declared that they have strengthened their defense by signing Cuenca for an unknown sum.
With an option to extend by a further 12 months, the Spaniard’s four-year contract will keep him with the team until June 2028.
The versatile central defender, who is eager to put his skills to the test in the Premier League, has voiced his happiness about the transfer. He can also play left back.
Cuenca declared, “I’m really, really happy,” to FFCtv. “I’m so happy to be here. Playing for Fulham and being here makes me very happy.
“Craven Cottage is a historic stadium, and the club is a historical club. I want to play in the Premier League, and I prefer Fulham because of the city, the team, and of course the famous stadium.”
For the first time in his career, Cuenca, who has played for Alcorcon, Barcelona, Getafe, Almeria, and Villarreal, will play his home football outside from Spain.
After playing in 60 games across all competitions, including 37 in the 2023–24 season, the 24-year-old will depart from the Yellow Submarines.
“I’m happy to welcome center-back Jorge Cuenca to Fulham,” vice chairman Tony Khan stated. He’s a gifted young player, and with Marco’s excellent coaching, we think he’ll continue to grow and contribute greatly to the team.”
After losing Tosin Adarabioyo at the end of the last campaign, Marco Silva, the manager of Fulham, will be happy to bolster his defense.
Fulham is still open to recruiting a center-back despite having signed Cuenca because of the uncertainty surrounding Tim Ream’s future.
After nine years at Craven Cottage, the seasoned defender is rumored to be in talks to join Charlotte FC of the Major League Soccer.
Cuenca may play in Monday’s friendly against Sevilla after already reuniting with the Fulham team at their Algarve training camp.
After that, the Cottagers will go to Germany to play their final friendly against Hoffenheim, and on August 5, they will play their first away Premier League encounter of the season against Manchester United.
