Former Huddersfield Town, Hull City and Sunderland man becomes free agent as contract terminated

Following his departure from Derby County at the end of the previous season, Waghorn signed a short-term contract with the Cobblers in early November.

He made seven appearances off the bench for the team, starting one and scoring one goal. Now, the 34-year-old frontman is once again available as a free agent.

Ian Sampson, Northampton’s temporary manager, stated: “Martyn came in and helped us get through the last few weeks.” We appreciate Martyn’s time with the club and wish him and his family the best of luck in the future. All parties have now decided to end the contract.

“He is a first-class character and a good man and we have enjoyed having him in the dressing room.”

After beginning his professional career with Sunderland, Waghorn later played for teams including Ipswich Town, Rangers, and Leicester City.

He originally moved to Yorkshire in 2011 for a loan stint with Hull, and he has since spent two stints there. He returned in 2023, ending the 2022/23 season on loan at Huddersfield from Coventry City.

Waghorn scored once in five outings for the Tigers and once in 13 for the Terriers.

His contract with Northampton was terminated in a “mutual and amicable” manner.

“Even though my time with Northampton Town has been brief, I have enjoyed it,” Waghorn stated. I appreciate how welcoming everyone has been, and this is a great club. I hope the future holds nothing but the best for all those concerned.
