Fatal collision closes westbound Highway 401 near Comber in Essex County

Following a collision that blocked the westbound lanes of Highway 401 near Comber on Friday morning, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) report that one person has died.

According to the police, at approximately 10:20 a.m., they were called to a multi-vehicle collision on the highway between Gracey Side Road and Comber Side Road by officers and the local ambulance service. Police report that there were minimal injuries from that crash.

Traffic slowed down as a result of the inquiry, and another crash happened. According to the authorities, it involved a pickup truck and two tractor trailers.

At the scene, the driver of one of the tractor trucks was declared dead. Police believe the truck driver’s injuries are potentially fatal, and he was taken to the hospital.

The other tractor-trailer driver stayed at the site and is unharmed.

At Essex County Road 42, the highway’s westbound lanes are still closed.

A number of additional automobiles and two semi-trucks were involved in the collision, which happened at milepost 284 just east of the Freya/Thor junction at 8:30 in the morning. One of the semi-trucks had a Honda Odyssey underneath it with another automobile piled on top of it.

The injuries sustained in the collision are not considered life-threatening, according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP). There have been no recorded fatalities.

The cause of the collision is being looked into.

For more than three hours, I-90 was stopped while workers attempted to remove cars from the scene and clear the freeway of debris. The freeway was reopened about 1 p.m., and traffic was moving normally.

Beginning on Monday, August 26, Market Street’s northbound lanes will be closed and its southbound lanes will be reduced to one lane due to a grind and overlay project.

Furthermore, between Mission Avenue and Wellesley Avenue, northbound lanes on Greene Street and Market Street will be blocked, and between Rockwell Avenue and Mission Avenue, southbound traffic will be limited to one lane.
