Exclusive: Southampton Make Decision on Appointing Danny Rohl to Replace Martin

Southampton have explored the possibility of appointing Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl as a replacement for Russell Martin.

Following a disastrous 5-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at home on Sunday night, Martin was relieved of his responsibilities. The Saints have only gained five points all season and are presently ranked last in the Premier League standings.

The Saints’ return to the Premier League would undoubtedly be a challenging season as they fight for their lives. Southampton has now tossed the dice by firing Martin over the weekend, putting the South Coast club in a risky position as they try to stay in the division.

According to sources, Southampton has been considering Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl in the last day, but the cost of a transfer has complicated matters. It is currently thought that they will not move forward and may instead seek a position abroad.

Rohl’s Wednesday team is now only five points outside of the play-off spots in ninth place in the Championship. Since joining the Yorkshire club in 2023, the 35-year-old has performed admirably.

Southampton face Liverpool in the EFL Cup quarter-final on Wednesday night, so it will be interesting to see whether they can have a new manager in place before then.

In Southampton’s statement after sacking Martin, the club confirmed that Under-21s manager Simon Rusk would be placed in temporary charge while they find a permanent replacement.

The Saints are next in Premier League action on Sunday as they travel to Fulham, and with Southampton being nine points adrift of safety, any new manager faces a difficult task to try and stay in the division.

It could still be an attractive job for a potential Martin replacement with the squad being filled with plenty of young talent.
