Driver killing two passengers in crash in Rushden

A man has been imprisoned for operating a vehicle that sped into the air at a roundabout and then crashed, killing two of his passengers.

Brian Sibanda, 21, and Carrie McLellan, 41, were killed in Rushden when Aaron Smith, 29, of Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, lost control of his BMW.

He admitted to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and was given an eight-year, eight-month prison sentence at Northampton Crown Court.

The head of Northamptonshire Police’s investigation, Det Con Lydia Watters, expressed her hope that the “families can take a small amount of comfort from the fact there has been some element of justice delivered”

On June 3, 2022, the car crashed at a roundabout near John Clark Way, killing another guy in his 20s, according to authorities.

The vehicle was observed being driven recklessly, exceeding speed limits and overshooting intersections.

“Loving, caring and considerate” is how Mr. Sibanda’s mother characterised her son. Smith described how she referred to her kid as “my gentle giant because that is exactly what he was – he was very gentle” in a statement read aloud at her sentence on May 3.

According to her boyfriend, Ms. McLellan “lit up the room and was the life and soul of the party,” as she stated in court.

She would never stop smiling and would always find time to hug or offer advice to friends and family when needed.”

According to Det Con Watters, the crash was “complex” to investigate.

“Aaron Smith made a choice and that choice was to drive dangerously and way beyond the limits of the road,” she stated.

He thereby became accountable for the deaths of two cherished individuals, and I hope he gives this reality considerable thought both while incarcerated and upon his release.

“We will continue to send our condolences to Brian’s and Carrie’s families for a very long time.”
