Crystal Palace receive huge £18m injury boost ahead of Leicester City and Man Utd
Adam Wharton, a midfielder for Crystal Palace, was left out of the England U21 team on Tuesday because of a persistent groin problem.
The 20-year-old was unexpectedly left off of Lee Carlsey’s first England roster. He was supposed to play for the U21s on September 6 and 9, respectively, against Northern Ireland and Austria.
He is already back in South London, though, and he has to work quickly to recover in time for the team’s upcoming Premier League game against Leicester City.
Since the beginning of the season, Wharton has had trouble staying healthy. Oliver Glasner, the manager of Crystal Palace, disclosed that Wharton was experiencing “fitness issues” following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
The top player for Palace started the preseason late despite being a member of the England team that advanced to the 2024 European Championship final in Germany.
Glasner said over the weekend, “Since he returned from the Euros, he has had some issues with his body—not big issues but a little bit here, a little bit there.”
“His level of fitness is not at its peak. After three weeks of training with us, he hasn’t been able to participate in every session.
Even yet, the Evening Standard reports that The Eagles are “optimistic” that Wharton will recover in time for the team’s September 14 home game against Leicester City, where he might play alongside recently signed Crystal Palace players Thevoh Chalobah and Maxence Lacroix.
Wharton has had a dismal few days after being unexpectedly left out of the most recent England team, which was chosen by former U21 manager Carsley.
The England interim manager said of his choice to bench Wharton, “I thought about him long and hard.” We spent a lot of time watching him play last season.
He’s a player who will be crucial to our success down the road. I believe it will benefit him to travel and play a few games with the U21 team.
Carsley chose to give Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, who is connected to Spurs, his first call-up instead. Gomes will be thrilled to debut for the Three Lions for the first time.
