Coventry City are set to sign West Brom striker
Coventry City are set to sign West Brom strike.
Brandon Thomas-Asante of West Brom is expected to join Coventry City after Matty Godden left for Charlton Athletic last month.
The 25-year-old, who began his career at League One team MK Dons, dropped into the national league, and then returned to League Two with Salford City, where he caught the attention of the Baggies as a wide player, is reportedly costing the Sky Blues about £2 million.
After switching to striker, the Ghanaian international became a consistent player in the Championship. What is City receiving from the player, then? Here, Joe Chapman of BirminghamLive, who has covered Albion in previous campaigns, provides an inside look at Mark Robins’ upcoming sixth summer addition.
“Coming from Salford, he was a bit of a gambler for £300,000. Steve Bruce might make the transfer, according to Matt Smith, the large Salford striker and Bruce’s son-in-law. He made a great impression right away, equalizing the score against Burnley in the closing moments of his first game.
“He was playing wide of a front three at Salford, and Albion had to rely on him turning into a nine very quickly after Daryl Dike sustained an injury. Karlan Grant fell out of favor once Carlos Corberan took Bruce’s place. Despite his inexperience in the Championship, the young man was quickly trusted to lead the line, a duty he performed with great pleasure.
One could argue that his performance in leading the line as a nine hasn’t been at his best. He has, in my opinion, performed admirably at Albion, and the fans will regret him when he leaves. There was a lot to enjoy about him, even though some people may have taken him for granted and became irritated by his poor finishing.
“I wouldn’t say he is particularly quick, but before Josh Maja got hurt last season, we were hoping he would be the player to go beyond the last man. Being a number nine yourself makes it difficult to do that, so it was hoped he would be that player who would go beyond because he is very strong playing off the shoulder and pressing, and his off-the-ball work is absolutely phenomenal. Albion were robbed of that dynamic last season.
“Although he is not the tallest striker, he is an amazing worker who did a really earnest job at Albion in terms of bringing players into the game while trying his very best to contribute with goals.”
He’s generally a person who enjoys having the ball at his feet. Despite his lack of experience at the level before to being in Albion, he is a rather competent Championship player despite not being the strongest in the air due to his height.
“Going forward, I think Coventry’s dynamic could be very interesting, especially with Asante complementing Ellis Simms or Haji Wright.” I believe Mark Robins is aware of the kind of player he is looking for, and I completely see why they felt they had to jump on this opportunity when they saw him heading to Hull since it benefits both sides. Although Asante didn’t particularly want to leave, he is able to stay in the Midlands, and the football team is one that you would anticipate to be in the top leagues the next season.
Any areas that need work or improvement?
Every rational West Brom supporter will tell you that what they have witnessed over the past few years is
“I’ve never spoken to a nicer football player than this one,” He’s a genuinely humble person who is a pleasure to converse with. When he first arrived, it was clear to us that he had earned his transfer to Albion via hard effort. When we chatted with him following his debut, he expressed surprise at being at this level of play. He has never overreached himself or taken anything for granted. He has worked incredibly hard to get to where he is and to be on the Ghana national team, therefore I don’t think he has a big ego. He’s a wonderfully laid-back guy and a pleasure to talk to.
I believe there is probably a limit based on what I have observed, but only time will tell. Additionally, he may demonstrate that he can improve his finishing by playing with the elite players at Cov and finding success on the left or in behind one of those strikers.
All he needs to do is add more ugly goals to his collection of worldies. He has scored overhead kicks and 30-yard goals; his finishing is his only area of weakness. He is versatile and has a good work rate.
“In his first season, he scored a goal against Stoke when he literally bicycle kicked the ball over the goalkeeper from about 25 yards with a defender at his back.” He has a knack for scoring goals, as evidenced by his incredible performance against Bristol City on Boxing Day. However, Albion supporters were hoping for more scruffy goals, and there were indications last season that he could score goals similar to those of Kevin Phillips from three or four yards out by simply toe poking them in.
