Chris Wilder have unlocked £23.5m Blades weapon fans waiting for long

In the first nine games of the 2024–25 Championship, Sheffield United has shown remarkable promise.

With Sunderland and the Blades tied on points at the moment, the Blades would be in the lead if not for their two-point deduction.

Chris Wilder’s team is still unbeaten despite playing near-perfect defense, giving up just three goals and maintaining six straight clean sheets.

They have been exceptional this season thanks to more than just their defensive prowess; Sheffield United’s forwards and midfielders have scored goals to propel them to six victories in the second division.

The way the Blades were relegated from the Premier League may have raised some concerns before the season, but players have risen to the occasion in the Championship, and Wilder appears to have worked his magic on a forward who was finding it difficult to justify his £23.5 million transfer fee.

Rhian Brewster has had a difficult time at Sheffield United, as evidenced by his five goals in 87 games, despite joining as a striker from Liverpool in 2020.

To enable the 24-year-old to function as an attacking midfielder, Wilder chose to start him behind Kieffer Moore in the Blades’ most recent match. Brewster may not have been as natural in that role, but he performed admirably.

After creating two opportunities and finishing 80% of his passes in just 66 minutes, he set up Jesurun Rak-Sakyi’s second goal to give his team the victory at Bramall Lane.

Brewster made his league debut for the first time since February, although he displayed no indications of fatigue and was able to contribute significantly to United’s 2024–25 success.

Supporters shouldn’t get ahead of themselves; all it will do is give the former Swansea City loanee some much-needed confidence after he fell short of the expectations that followed his arrival to Yorkshire four years ago.

It will take consistency for Brewster to win over fans.
Although it was crucial for Brewster to record his first successful game of the year, this can’t keep happening infrequently.

It’s true that the 24-year-old will never be the £20 million player that his contract called for, but it would also be unjust to hold him to that standard given that he had no say over the 2020 price tag.

Although the former Liverpool player’s potential may have decreased, Brewster has no reason to think that winning the Championship is the pinnacle of his abilities.

Perhaps Wilder has found a new star hiding in the shadows of Bramall Lane if he can replicate his Luton victory performance in future games. The future may hold Brewster away from the striker position, and if he keeps proving to be a superb playmaker, things might go really fantastic for both Sheffield United and Brewster in the coming years.
