Chris Davies disagrees with Wayne Rooney about Jay Stansfield after Birmingham City goal glut

After Birmingham City’s record-breaking acquisition scored for the fourth straight League One game, Chris Davies praised Jay Stansfield as “a natural goalscorer.”

On Boxing Day, Blues defeated Burton Albion 2-0 thanks to a penalty kick from Stansfield.

By doing this, Stansfield scored for the fourth straight league game. Since rejoining the Blues in the summer, he has now scored eight goals in his past eight games and fourteen goals overall.

Whilst the debate over Stansfield’s best position is still ongoing, it is clear the 22-year-old has a knack of sniffing out chances.

Former Blues boss Wayne Rooney once said Stansfield isn’t a natural goalscorer, but Davies says that some of the forward’s recent goals prove that he is.

Davies stated, “I believe he’s a natural goalscorer.” There have been a few goals lately that indicate that. His goal against Barnsley at the back-post from the corner and the goal the other night at Crawley to arrive in there.

“I’m playing him just off the left side so he’s having to make these runs into the goalscoring positions so he’s definitely a natural finisher.”

Stansfield is the third-tier’s most productive player per 90 minutes, having scored 12 league goals in just 15 games.

Stansfield is the front-runner for the Golden Boot since Louie Barry, the league’s top scorer at the moment, is scheduled to return to parent club Aston Villa in January after being loaned from Stockport.

“Fans will always warm to a player like that anyway, because he runs, he works, he’s just infectious, and then he’s got quality,” Davies continued. He’s a risky player who never fails to spot an opening and take advantage of it.

“Due to the care given to the injured player, he had a lot of time to wait for the penalty, but he handled it well, and Jay put on another strong performance.”
