Charlton Athletic set for busy few weeks after Nathan Jones claims
Charlton Athletic could be set for a busy few weeks in the transfer window, after manager Nathan Jones admitted that change was needed following their pre-season defeat against AFC Wimbledon.
A few weeks before their League One campaign begins with a trip to Wigan Athletic on August 10th, the Addicks suffered their first pre-season setback at the hands of the Dons, coached by Charlton’s former captain Johnnie Jackson, 2-0.
Despite the fact that seven new players, including Luke Berry, Matty Godden, and Greg Docherty, arrived to The Valley this summer, Nathan Jones stated following the game that he is not yet happy with the status of his team.
After the friendly, the Welshman gave an interview that was published on Charlton’s official X account. In it, he outlined the things he believes must happen before the summer transfer window closes: “We need to move one or two on, and then we need to bring one or two in, in terms of strengthening and finalising the squad,” Jones said. “I would have liked for it to be done by now, but obviously it hasn’t been, but look, we’ll keep working right until the end of the window and try to strengthen the side, before we can pull together.”
“Look, we need to change the fact that we are now working with large numbers. We need to reach a point when our squad is established in.
“We know exactly what we want to do, and we’ve kind of worked that out a little bit this week.”
It’s obvious that Jones wants to add more players before the window closes, but in order for that to happen, some players must leave.
Alfie May and Conor McGrandles left The Valley earlier in the transfer window to join Birmingham City and Lincoln City, respectively, and goalkeeper Harry Isted joined Burton Albion. The Addicks’ roster is still too large, despite the departure of a few players, such as captain George Dobson, at the conclusion of their contracts last season, as Jones hinted.
Scottish midfielder Scott Fraser is one player who Charlton would be willing to see go this summer. Another player who might leave the team before the transfer season ends is defender Lucas Ness, who is also drawing interest from other teams.
It won’t be shocking if a few players depart Charlton initially if Jones is going to bring in the transfer targets he wants in the upcoming weeks.
Rumors have surfaced regarding the players Jones hopes to sign before the summer is up, and an update has been provided regarding the immediate future of one trialist who has spent the majority of the preseason with the Addicks.
Asmir Begovic, a goalkeeper from Bosnia, has been in talks with Charlton. He may bring experience to a defense that finished fifth in League One the previous year and hasn’t kept a clean sheet this preseason.
Journalist Richard Cawley reports that 19-year-old Jamaican international Kaheim Dixon, a winger, is anticipated to sign with the team after obtaining a work permit.
Teddy Bishop, a midfielder who appeared on trial during the Addicks’ preseason matches, is no longer training with the team, according to Cawley. It is unclear if Jones still wants him, but he is one guy who may sign based on whether other players leave the team.
As Charlton gets ready for their fifth season in a row in League One, they may have a busy few weeks in terms of both new hires and departures.
