Charlton Athletic in talks with 20-year-old over contract extension
The 20-year-old wing-back saw his deal extended by 12 months in the summer and is due to become a free agent in June 2025.
He has said, as per a report by London News Online: “We’re still undergoing negotiations.”
“I love it at Charlton,” he continued. They have a track record of nurturing young athletes. Future events will be whatever they are.
“Football is not easy,” Small went on. It’s not an easy league. We want our followers to support us even more because it’s incredible when The Valley is performing. The fans’ enthusiasm is palpable. It motivates players and brings out the best in us.
“We need that additional support when we are falling behind or not seeing results. The squad’s morale is still high. We’re sticking together.”
Charlton Athletic signed Small last winter to bolster their defensive ranks.
It would be a blow to lose him for nothing so it is important that they are able to strike an agreement with him.
He is young and has the potential to get better in the future.
Small was on the books at West Brom and Everton before linking up with Southampton back in 2021.
He spent over three years with the Saints and went on to play once for their first-team as a teenager.
The ex-England youth international was loaned out by the Premier League side to Port Vale and St Mirren to get some experience under his belt.
Since joining Charlton Athletic on a permanent basis, he has made 33 appearances in all competitions, 19 of which have come in this campaign.
It will take time to determine if the Addicks are able to keep him on for an extended period of time.
Last time out, Nathan Jones’ team couldn’t find a way to defeat the Stags and ended up drawing 0-0 at home against Mansfield Town.
Their recent form has declined, and they currently sit in 14th position in the table.
The London team is seven points short of the playoffs with 24 points on the board.
Next up for Charlton Athletic is an away trip to Sixfields to face a Northampton Town side without a manager.
