Captaincy role for ex-Leeds Rhinos & Castleford Tigers man as Wakefield Trinity star joins coaching staff
Following a successful recovery from a long-term injury with the Birmingham-based Midlands Hurricanes this season, the 25-year-old Scotland international was named captain.
Before spending some time playing rugby union in Scotland, McLelland started his career at the Tigers’ academy.
2018 saw him sign with the Rhinos, and the following year he made his first of 16 appearances.
McLelland returned to the Tigers for the 2022 season, however he missed all of Castleford’s games due to a devastating knee injury sustained in August of the previous year, and his contract was terminated in June of 2023.
He signed for Midlands at the start of this year and made his long-awaited comeback in February, going on to score five tries in 15 games and being named coaches’ player of the year. Former Hunslet player Jon-Luke Kirby will continue as vice-captain.
Josh Griffin, a former Castleford center and second rower for Wakefield Trinity, has joined Midlands as a strength and conditioning coach for the 2025 campaign.
Griffin, 34, will play for Trinity in addition to this job.
