Barnsley FC star top Plymouth Argyle’s three-man transfer shortlist

And until the Pilgrims can start winning more games, there’s a good probability they’ll be playing in League One the next season.

Their 3-3 draw with Middlesbrough on Saturday shows that they can compete in this level, but more needs to be done in the transfer market and on the field to give Argyle the best opportunity of staying in the second division after this season ends.

The club’s lack of squad depth has been a source of concern for many Plymouth supporters in recent months, and when 2025 arrives, this issue will need to be resolved.

Brandon Williams

Brandon Williams struggled to get starts each week while on loan at Ipswich Town last season.

It’s hardly surprising that he found it difficult to start every game for the Tractor Boys when full-back options like Leif Davis and Harry Clarke were available.

Williams is still a gifted player, though, and Plymouth could certainly improve in the full-back position.

They may have some depth in this area, but now they need an injection of quality and Williams, if he’s kept himself fit, could be a great full-back option to have.

Having Mumba and Williams as starting full-backs could boost Plymouth’s chances of staying up, with the former arguably establishing himself as one of Argyle’s best players this season.

The latter, meanwhile, is currently a free agent following his exit from Manchester United.

Plymouth are conceding at an average rate of more than two goals per league game this season, and a top-quality centre-back option could help the Pilgrims to keep clean sheets.

James Hill

James Hill could be an excellent option, with the player impressing at Blackburn Rovers during the first half of last season before he was recalled.

Despite being retained by AFC Bournemouth this season, he has barely had a sniff of action, and a loan move could end up working out well for all parties.

Plymouth would have a top player at their disposal, Bournemouth could see him develop and the player will have the opportunity to shine in the second tier again.

Adam Phillips

A central midfielder is at the top of plenty of Plymouth fans’ wishlists for the January window – and they could benefit from someone who can contribute in both the defensive and attacking thirds.

Phillips is someone who can do this, with the Barnsley star contributing plenty offensively during the 2024/25 campaign thus far.

The 26-year-old should be a viable option for the Pilgrims because of his outstanding passing range and frequent role in the Tykes’ assaults.

Phillips is a particularly desirable choice prior to the January transfer window because he can also play in a deep midfield role.

Plymouth could utilize their advantage to negotiate a contract that will give them value for their money if the player is in a frantic attempt to relocate to Home Park.
