Barnsley boss Darrell Clarke has said they have to ‘improve’ the squad this winter
Barnsley are planning to be busy in the upcoming January transfer window as they look to bolster their ranks with some new faces ahead of the second-half of the season.
The Tykes are currently four points outside of the top six in League One, sitting in eighth position.
According to the Barnsley Chronicle, Clarke provided this update on their hiring intentions: “Judge us after the window.” There have been many changes since last summer, therefore we need to get stronger.
It goes without saying that we wish to leave the division. The squad has to be improved as much as possible during the window. I’m having excellent conversations with the board and Mladen (Sormaz, the sporting director). We understand where we need to improve and are on the same page.
Bolton Wanderers defeated Barnsley in the semi-finals of the previous season’s playoffs.
The previous year, Sheffield Wednesday defeated them at Wembley in the final.
After Darrell Clarke’s stint at Cheltenham Town, the Tykes went to the former Bristol Rovers, Port Vale, and Walsall manager in the summer in hopes of returning to the top division this season.
To bolster their team, Barnsley went out to the market and acquired players like Marc Roberts, Stephen Humphrys, Davis Kellior-Dunn, and Georgie Gent, among others.
In order to make room and money in their ranks, they also severed their links with players including Devante Cole, Jordan Williams, Herbie Kane, and Callum Styles.
Considering they lost a few key individuals, the Yorkshire outfit aren’t in a bad position at the moment and will be able to push on if they can acquire the right type of targets next month.
In an attempt to get closer to Reading in sixth position, Barnsley will return to action this weekend when they travel down south to play Exeter City. In seventh place, Bolton Wanderers are above them.
Clarke’s team has lost both of their recent games against Birmingham City and Wrexham.
They will be keen to defeat the Grecians in order to avenge the latter’s 2-1 victory against them at Oakwell last time out. Against the Blues, Adam Phillips was sent off.
