Armed police rush to hospital following reports of 'stabbing' in Kilmarnock
Following an incident outside a hospital in Scotland this evening, armed police hurried to the area.
The Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, was placed under lockdown at approximately 7:45 p.m. when armed police arrived.
Police say they don’t think the incident had anything to do with terrorism.
Three “potentially linked” events are under investigation, according to Police Scotland.
A police spokesperson stated: “The first occurred around 7.45pm outside Crosshouse Hospital, the second around 20 minutes later on Portland Street, and the third, a serious road crash, on the A76, around 8.30pm.”
According to witnesses, two persons were attacked, therefore ambulances were redirected away from the hospital, according to the Daily Record.
As of right now, it’s unknown if anyone has been taken into custody in relation to the alleged incident.
Since then, NHS Ayrshire and Arran have announced that the lockdown has been lifted following police clearance. As reported by an eyewitness to the Daily Record, “Everything is under lockdown.”
“There are armed police there, and they are evacuating the area.”
“We can confirm the ongoing incidents in the Kilmarnock area are not being treated as terrorist-related,” a statement from Police Scotland stated.
“These areas have been cordoned off and investigations into these incidents are still in the early stages.”
“There is no cause for concern for the wider community.”Earlier, the public was asked to stay away from the area.
“My thoughts are with those involved in these very serious incidents in Crosshouse/Kilmarnock,” tweeted First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.
“Please help @AyrshirePolice do their job by following the advice to stay away from the areas affected.”
Traffic was prohibited in a portion of the town center near the viaduct while emergency personnel responded.
Crawford McGuffie, medical director of NHS Ayrshire & Arran, verified that an event occurred on Thursday night.
“NHS Ayrshire & Arran is aware of an incident in the grounds of University Hospital Crosshouse,” he had previously stated.
“As a result, ambulances were diverted to University Hospital Ayr and the hospital was placed under lockdown.
In order to protect the security of employees, patients, and guests, we are supporting Police Scotland in their investigations.
“At this time, we are unable to comment further as this is a Police Scotland incident.”
“University Hospital Crosshouse was placed under lockdown following the Police incident earlier,” the trust tweeted in a statement at 10.45.
“Police Scotland have confirmed the risk to patients, staff and visitors to the hospital is minimal, and so this lockdown has been lifted.”
