Air ambulance called after a catastrophic incident that claimed lives
Kent Police called to three vehicle crash that blocked Medway Tunnel
On Saturday morning, October 12, there was significant traffic in Rochester due to an incident involving three vehicles that partially stopped the Medway Tunnel. Just before 7.30 am, Kent Police officers were dispatched to the area on the A289 carriageway heading towards Strood, between Maritime Way, close to the University of Kent, and Anthonys Way, beside Upnor Roundabout.
The main road between Rochester and Strood was partially closed by the crash, causing severe traffic jams and protracted delays that lasted all morning. Inrix, a traffic and travel monitoring agency, reported lines back as far as The Strand roundabout during the height of the event.
“A289 Medway Tunnel Westbound partially blocked, queueing traffic due to accident from Maritime Way (University of Kent) to Anthonys Way (Upnor Roundabout),” according to an Inrix update at the time. Traffic jam to return to The Strand Roundabout.
“Kent Police was called at 7.24am on Saturday 8, to a collision involving three vehicles in the Strood-bound carriageway of the Medway Tunnel,” a spokeswoman for the force continued. While plans are being made to recover the automobiles, one lane is closed and officers are currently present at the area. No injuries have been recorded.
Around 10 a.m., the tunnel was cleared, and shortly after that, regular traffic resumed. See our live blog of this event here as it happened.
