A69 lorry fire: Road reopens with traffic lights in place after six hour closure

A lorry fire caused the A69 to close in both directions and to have traffic in lines.

After a lorry fire, a significant Northumbrian route has now reopened.

Due to a lorry fire between the A686 at Haydon Bridge and the Hexham Road intersection at Warden, the A69 was closed in both directions and traffic was backed up. The scene was visited by emergency services.

A representative for Northumbria Police stated: “We got a report of a vehicle fire on the A69 at Haydon Bridge, in Northumberland, around 10:20 am on Tuesday. There are emergency services available. The road is closed in both directions at this area, therefore drivers should take alternate routes whenever feasible.”

For what purpose were temporary traffic lights installed?
The A69 between the A686 (Haydon Bridge) and the B6531 (Hexham) has reopened in both directions, according to Highways England North East.

They indicated that in order to facilitate tomorrow’s carriageway resurfacing work, temporary traffic lights had been deployed.

When traveling through the area, they have asked visitors to factor in extra time for their route.
