Woman arrested in connection with death of former Oldham player’s son
On October 18, just after 7 a.m., police discovered the kid, who had previously been named Madison, dead at a residence in Trafford, Greater Manchester.
Following his son’s passing, Smith’s previous teams, including Oldham, with whom he played from 2011 to 2013, sent numerous condolence notes.
A lady in her 40s was arrested in relation to the event, but she was released on bail while Greater Manchester Police (GMP) conducted further investigations, the police department announced on Monday, December 16.
A GMP representative stated: “On Friday, October 18, 2024, at around 7.10 a.m., officers went to a welfare issue in Trafford and tragically discovered an infant dead.
“While we continue to look into the circumstances surrounding this death, a woman in her 40s who was arrested on suspicion of child neglect has been released on bail.”
At the time of Madison’s demise, Oldham Athletic’s X page released the following statement: “As a club, we send our love and deepest condolences to Matt Smith and his family, following the incredibly sad passing of his four-month-old son, Madison.”
Supporting messages were sent by a number of Smith’s other previous teams, including Millwall and Queens Park Rangers.
Madison was the son of Smith, 35, and Amy, 37, the daughter of former football player and current manager Steve Bruce.
After his grandson passed away, Bruce, 63, who is presently the manager of League One team Blackpool, was unable to attend the team’s October 19 match against Barnsley.
