Ex-Salford Red Devils and Wakefield Trinity man named captain of League One club
After starting in the NRL with Newcastle Knights in 2008, the 37-year-old center is getting ready for his 17th season in professional rugby league.
He has made 38 appearances with Keighley at Cougar Park over the last two and a half years of his career.
In that time, the veteran has scored 24 tries, 13 of which came during the previous season when Keighley came very close to being promoted back to the Championship.
Head coach Jake Webster has granted Sa’u the honor of leading Keighley through the 2025 season due to his seniority and the expertise he has accumulated over his career. George Flanagan and Dan Parker will serve as vice-captains.
Junior exhibits all the credentials of a leader,” Webster told the Keighley Cougars website. “He’s a tough competitor and leads with his actions.
“I am challenging him to move out of his comfort zone and lead with his words and really steer this side around the field. The boys respect him, his experience speaks for itself. With George and Dan alongside him I have three great leaders in this team who have bought into what we are trying to achieve at this club.”
Sa’u spent five seasons with Newcastle Knights before joining Melbourne Storm in 2013 and Salford a year later. He would spend five and a half years in Greater Manchester with the Red Devils playing 142 games and touching down 59 times with his last season seeing him make eight appearances as Salford reached the 2019 Grand Final.
After a brief loan stint with Wakefield Trinity, he joined Leigh Leopards midway through that season. Prior to joining the Cougars, he played 16 games for Old Glory DC, a Major League Rugby team.
The club announced the decision today while also confirming that Izaac Farrell will wear the number six shirt, which was retired following the death of Danny Jones. The shirt will feature The Danny Jones Defibrillator logo on the back.
