SPFL issue strongly worded statement slamming ‘completely unacceptable’ use of pyro in Celtic vs Rangers final
In its ongoing investigation against the Old Firm pair, the SPFL has warned Celtic and Rangers once more that their fans’ pre-match pyrotechnics during the Premier Sports Cup final were “completely unacceptable.”
Although the game started late because of several issues before kickoff, the Glasgow titans played out a thrilling 3-3 draw that saw Celtic win 5-4 on penalties.
Following their respective violations in the semi-final victories over Aberdeen and Motherwell, both teams have now been informed that it will be included in an ongoing investigation that will be heard in January.
“The Premier Sports Cup Final on Sunday was an exciting match, full of twists and turns,” the statement said. For their roles in one of the most thrilling cup finals in recent memory, both clubs are deserving of a great deal of praise.
Rangers and Celtic displayed end-to-end, dramatic, and passionate football, showcasing everything that is wonderful in our sport.
Everyone at the SPFL would like to pass on our congratulations to the players, management and directors of Celtic on their trophy win, and we also send our commiserations to everyone connected with Rangers, who helped make it such a thrilling showpiece event.
“However, the SPFL, Police Scotland and the Scottish FA have been clear that the unauthorised use of pyrotechnics is illegal and unsafe.
Therefore, the disruptive displays which took place before and during Sunday’s match were completely unacceptable and again led to a delay to the start of the match.
“The SPFL will liaise with Police Scotland regarding their investigations into this illegal behaviour and these events will also be considered as part of the SPFL’s ongoing disciplinary investigations into both clubs regarding the use of pyrotechnics.
“The unacceptable encroachment of supporters onto the Hampden Park trackside area during and after the match is one of the issues that will be considered in the match delegate’s report that the SPFL is awaiting after the game.”
