Adam Lakeland thinks his King’s Lynn Town squad is doing well right now as football moves into the customarily crowded holiday schedule
Lynn is only three points behind Curzon Ashton, the leaders of the National League North, who have a game left, after hosting Alfreton on Saturday, Lynn will travel to Brackley in the middle of the week and then Chester in a week.
Crucially, despite having all but one player available for selection, they have bounced back from a three-game losing streak with three consecutive victories.
“We simply need to keep trying to win games,” the Linnets manager stated. In terms of the outcomes, we experienced a minor setback. We’ve probably won six of the last ten league games. Despite having lost three games and drawn one, we are still clearly in a very strong position.
This league operates in that manner. You may experience brief dips in performance during the season, but as long as you win a lot of games, you’ll accumulate a lot of points. The players deserve praise for how well we responded in these three home games after clearly losing three before that.
To a man, everyone is providing us with everything we need and what I anticipate, including three clean sheets. We are already reaping the benefits.
Goalkeeper Paul Jones missed last week’s 1-0 home win over Scarborough with a knee problem, but other than that, the Lynn treatment room has been quiet – a far cry from a run when the likes of Jonny Margetts, Josh Hmami, Tommy Hughes, Gold Omotayo, Sam Walker and Freddie Sass were all sidelined.
“We have Kian Ronan and Gold (Omotayo) not in the 16 today, but both fit and ready to go,” Lakeland said last weekend. “Gold’s obviously been out for four weeks, trained Thursday, Friday and looks fine. But off the back of obviously a good win against Kidderminster, we just felt we’d leave everything as it was.
But we’re entering a busy period and for us to be going into it with only Paul Jones unavailable is massive for us, because I look at other teams and they’ve got good players, but they’ve got players missing as well.
“If you’re going to do well in this league, it’s not about 11, it’s about your squad and I’ve got confidence that our squad is strong enough to see us be competitive in these games over the Christmas period. Everybody’s got to be ready to go because they will all be needed.”
Curzon won in midweek, as did Alfreton, but there is plenty of jostling for position, as Lakeland acknowledged.
“There’s a long way to go,” he said. “We’re 20 games in now. We’ve gone above Chorley and Scunthorpe – big teams in this league. It (Scarborough game) was our game in hand, we were on 19 games they were on 20, so for us to win it is massive.
“I think it makes it even more important for us going into the upcoming fixtures that we’ve got, because whilst the likes of Alfreton and Brackley, in particular, aren’t right there at the minute, they will be.
“They have obviously got games in hand and they’re both very good teams so by us winning our games here at home, it means that going into those games against Alfreton here and then Brackley away, we are in a strong position.
“But you’re always better having points on the board than games in the bank, because when you’ve got so many games to play, you play a lot of Tuesday games, back-to-back games Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, later on in the season teams pick up injuries.
So it was really important that we got the game on today. It was even more important that we won it and we’ve just got to keep working hard to keep trying to win more games.”
