Referee from controversial Derby County defeat set for Rams v Portsmouth clash

Derby County’s match against Portsmouth tomorrow night will be officiated by the same referee who officiated their contentious loss to Norwich City earlier in the season.

Assistant Mark Stevens, who assisted Oliver Langford during the season’s defeat to the Canaries, will be joining him for the Championship match at Pride Park.

When Josh Sergent crossed the ball to the winger who opened the scoring, Borja Sainz scored a goal before halftime that should have been disallowed since it was obviously out of play. Derby was furious.

There was also another similar decision that went against Derby for the third goal when a counter-attack started as the Rams had legitimate appeals for a corner when the ball seemed to cross the byline.

After voicing their concerns after the 3-2 loss, Derby got feedback from the Professional Game of Match Officials Limited. Warne stated at the time: “We have heard back (from the PGMOL).”

“They both believe that the first goal was plainly out of play, but with all the footage available, it’s hard to argue with them. Because they have an angle that indicates the ball is just in, they believe the third goal is still in play.

“We also queried that we thought James Collins was offside for our second goal, just to show we’re balanced, if you know what I mean. But they disagree. They didn’t think he was.”
