”It’s baffling” – Nathan Jones slams Charlton Athletic players after Leyton Orient exploits
Dan Agyei and Charlie Kelman both scored goals in stoppage time of the second half to guarantee the Addicks’ elimination from the EFL Trophy.
The London club will be devastated by this, as they will not be able to win any awards.
Charlton’s attention will now shift to their League One campaign, where they hope to better their performance and place in the top six this year.
Jones has claimed that Charlton’s performance in the loss to Leyton Orient was worse than any he’d seen before due to how easy it was to get through them and create chances.
While he admitted the number of changes to the side were significant, he has singled out issues involving athleticism, desire, and structure that will need to be worked on in order to improve results.
“I can’t remember [being carved open as much as that],” said Jones, via Louis Mendez of the BBC on Twitter.
“With the greatest of respect, I’ve played against Man City and they didn’t have a shot on target.
“To have 16, 17 shots against you against, with the greatest of respect, Leyton Orient, it’s baffling.
Many players have not participated. [Rarmani Edmonds-Green], [Dan] Potts. those who haven’t participated.
We were so far away from it tonight, so that was evident.
“They appeared to have a chance to score each time we turned the ball over.”Whether it was athleticism, structure, or ambition, we were so different tonight.
“Statistically, we are the league’s greatest defensive team, but you wouldn’t believe that tonight.
The squad I’ve inherited, players I’ve inherited that, you know, you can’t change everything overnight.
Jones makes it apparent that the team still has a lot of work to do before they can compete, which is undoubtedly a sign of possible January business.
If the team hopes to close the gap to the top six this season, it may be a busy month.
With just one victory in their previous eight league games, Charlton is currently eight points outside of the playoffs in 12th place.
Jones will undoubtedly be hoping for one or two arrivals in the upcoming year to aid, even though that gap can still be filled in the remaining time.
