Adelaide winger & Sydney keeper learn length of bans for red cards after MRP review

Football Australia’s independent Match Review Panel (MRP) convened on Monday afternoon to consider the two incidents.

The MRP, which was made up of Alan Davidson, Alan Contini, and Simon Micallef (Chair), determined that Folami had engaged in “serious unsporting conduct” when he made contact with Phillip Cancar’s face during a brawl with the Newcastle Jets defender.

Before he can be selected again against Sydney FC on Friday, December 20, Folami will serve the required minimum one-game punishment for the offense and miss Adelaide’s Round 7 trip to play Central Coast Mariners.

After being sent off in the first half of Sydney FC’s match against the Central Coast Mariners on Sunday night, Devenish-Meares will also serve a one-game suspension.

Devenish-Meares clattered with the Mariners striker after stepping outside his area to confront Alou Kuol for the ball in his Isuzu UTE A-League debut.

Devenish-Meares was given a one-game ban, the lowest penalty for the offense, after the MRP found that he had committed the crime of “denying the opposing team an obvious goalscoring opportunity.”

Like Adelaide’s Folami, Devenish-Meares will be available for selection when the two sides play each other in Round 9 on December 20. He will miss his team’s matchup with Western United in Round 8.
