Police announce road closure after air ambulance called to six-vehicle crash

A road on the outskirts of Swindon has been closed by police after a major six-vehicle crash caused emergency services to rush to the scene.

The crash between Royal Wootton Bassett and Minety took place just before 8:43 am today when six vehicles collided on Braydon Road.

Although the exact details of the crash are still unclear, one black vehicle landed overturned in a nearby field with five people trapped inside it.

Police cars, fire engines, land ambulances and an air ambulance were all seen rushing to the scene.

“We were called at 8:43 am today with reports of a road traffic collision on the B4696 Braydon Road,” said a spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Police.

“Two fire engines were mobilized (Westlea and Stratton) and on arrival found one car had left the road with the occupier trapped.

“Crews used Halmatro cutting gear and airbags to stabilize the vehicle and extricate the casualty. The stop was in at 9:40 am.”

The road will be reopened to the public just after midnight, and the South Western Ambulance Service confirmed that 17 casualty has been taken to Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

Wiltshire Police were called to Royal Wootton Bassett and Minety  just before 8:43 am today when six vehicles collided on Braydon Road.

The victims were taken to Great Western Hospital in Swindon with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

None of the defendants can be named for legal reasons.
