Trauma, pundit reveal in reference to Jack Marriott's potential future with the Wrexham AFC.
Jack Marriott, who has scored five goals in ten League One games for Wrexham AFC, is having the finest start to a season in seven years.
After joining the Rams in 2018 from Peteborough United, the former Derby County striker has struggled to score goals, but he is starting to resemble his regular self once more.
The 30-year-old has had a difficult time adjusting to life in Wales after leaving Fleetwood Town in January, but he has begun to score goals more frequently in the first two months of the 2024–25 season thanks to consistent playing time.
He was only given a one-and-a-half year contract when joining the STōK Cae Ras, though, and it will expire at the end of this season if nothing happens in the interim.
That does indicate that Marriott’s next few months will be fascinating as he fights for a new contract that will allow him to remain at Wrexham indefinitely.
Carlton Palmer predicts the Marriott contract.
Although there is still time for the striker’s contract to be extended, other teams will have the opportunity to chat with him about signing for the 2025–2026 campaign if nothing is done by January.
Wrexham shouldn’t be in this predicament, especially considering the age of the rest of their forward line.
Carlton Palmer, a former midfielder for Sheffield Wednesday and England, shared his opinions with Football League World regarding the current state of affairs and whether or not the Red Dragons ought to keep the 30-year-old on after the current campaign.
“Wrexham, after getting promoted, are flying high again this season in League One,” he remarked in an exclusive interview with FLW. Currently ranked second, they are aiming for another promotion. They’re moving quite quickly.
Jack Marriott of Wrexham is on a scorching streak, having scored five goals in ten games. However, his contract expires in the summer. The owners, despite the fact that he is thirty years old, will undoubtedly review his contract.
As for whether he can advance to the next league and whether they will look at his contract situation, I believe they will be considering these things. However, as I’ve already mentioned, when players have a contract expires, other clubs start to look for new hires in January, which simply throws off the player and the team.
Palmer went on, “I think Wrexham have been well-organized in the last two seasons under their new ownership, and I’m sure they’ll be looking at the situation and saying, ‘right, if we can’t tie him down to a new deal, let’s get him out in January and get a replacement in till the end of the season,’ because, once again, they have a great opportunity to get another promotion, so they won’t want anybody to disrupt that.”
“Jack will likely score 20 goals this season if he keeps up his current pace, so I believe the Welsh team will try to offer him a new contract. The question is whether he will sign the length of contract they may attempt to
“It’s possible that he will see out his contract and become a free agent at the end of the season because I don’t think they’ll be looking to offer him a three- or four-year deal given his age. If they let him leave in January, I’d be shocked.”
Marriott’s future will be impacted by Paul Mullin’s performance.
Paul Mullin and his goal-scoring prowess have dominated Wrexham’s headlines for the past few seasons.
Though he has only started one game since recovering from back surgery in the summer, the 29-year-old has made eight league appearances without scoring a goal.
Although Marriott has scored twice in the EFL Trophy, Phil Parkinson will increasingly need to rely on him to score goals from the forward positions the longer he goes without scoring in League One.
Offering their number eleven another year on his contract could be the ideal approach to keep everyone happy as Wrexham looks to continue their campaign for promotion to the Championship. Letting other clubs potentially speak to him in January could be a massive mistake.
