Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette’s season comes to an end lead to retirement
After missing more than eight weeks of play due to a calf ailment, Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette will end his season on the injured list with a broken right middle finger.
Two days after he returned and played in his first game since July 19, the two-time All-Star was put on the 10-day injury list on Thursday.
Tuesday night against Texas, Bichette finished the game with two hits and an RBI. Before the game, he took ground balls and shattered his throwing finger. He was anticipated to return to the Blue Jays lineup on Wednesday. X-rays proved that the bone was shattered.
He was bothered by the fact that he was still hitting and finishing his defensive work when it happened. According to Blue Jays manager John Schneider, “he was frustrated.”
“I do believe that in terms of perspective and other things, he’s in a fairly good place. He was clearly frustrated, but he also knew that this would lead to something good.
Bichette will see a hand specialist, according to Schneider, but the shortstop should have a typical offseason and be prepared for spring camp.
In 81 games this season, Bichette—who made his major league debut in 2019—had a career-low batting average of.225 while registering four home runs and 31 RBIs.
Outfielder Jonatan Clase was added to the roster for Toronto’s series finale against the Rangers after being brought up from Triple-A. On July 26, Clase was acquired by the Blue Jays as part of the trade that sent Yimi Garcia to Seattle.
