Young boy with life threatening injured after driver accidentally crashes vehicle into Hilo home

Hawaii News Now, or HILO A car struck a Hilo home on Thursday, sending an older man into custody and a young child to the hospital.

Officers from Hawaii County police said they were called to a house on Kaumana Drive just after six o’clock in the evening.

A 71-year-old guy was reportedly parked outside the house while visiting an acquaintance. He drove his car inadvertently towards the house as he was leaving, slamming into the living room.

The impact caused injuries to a 7-year-old boy.

After sustaining severe injuries during his transport to the Hilo Benioff Medical Centre, his condition has been described as stable.

Wayne Okutsu, a Hilo resident, was identified as the driver. He was arrested on charges of first-degree negligence.

He was being detained at the East Hawaii Detention Facility, according to the police, pending additional investigation.
