Talk to revisit era of the Madison, Romer Parrish and Charlton’s

This Saturday, October 30 from 11.30 to 12.30 at Middlesbrough Town Hall, there will be a lecture about the 1970s and 1980s in the area. People are welcome to share their experiences, bring memorabilia, and, for the more daring among you, dress in period clothing!

Based on the best-selling local history book, stories of Middlesbrough in the 1970s and 1980s by Dr. Tosh Warwick will share hundreds of stories and rarely seen photos of the town from archives, library collections, and private collections.

The discussion promises to cover a wide range of topics, including Middlesbrough’s historic structures, lost landmarks, well-known stores and pubs, industry, and sports life.

The illustrated lecture includes pictures of beloved establishments like Romer Parrish’s and Newboulds, well-known hangouts like The Masham and Madison, as well as recollections and images of long-gone structures and locations like the Royal Exchange and Ayresome Park.

The popularity of Memories of Middlesbrough in the 1970s and 1980s, according to author Dr. Tosh Warwick, “highlighted the passion of local people for the area’s history and eagerness to revisit events, memorable places, lost buildings, and even fashions of the era!”

“The past 18 months have proven incredibly challenging for everyone and by encouraging people to have a bit of fun and bring along an artefact from the period, share memories or even showcase some fashion items hidden in the back of the wardrobe it is hoped the event will bring back fond memories and put a smile on faces.”

The event, which is a part of the Discover Middlesbrough Festival, is one of many that will be held in October to highlight the town’s art, culture, and legacy. These events will include treks exploring Boro’s previous homes and stories about life in interwar Middlesbrough.

At the event, attendees will have the opportunity to purchase autographed copies of Memories of Middlesbrough in the 1970s and 1980s, with money accepted on the door (£2.50 entrance including refreshments).
