Leeds United midfielder has already tipped to leave
Joe Gelhardt has already been tipped to leave Leeds United in the January transfer window by Carlton Palmer.
After fighting for minutes, the former Whites midfielder told Football League World on September 5 that he was surprised the attacker hadn’t departed Elland Road before the summer deadline.
And he anticipates Gelhardt’s agents to be working on a move away, possibly permanently, if that situation doesn’t alter between now and the winter.
“I’m surprised he didn’t leave Leeds this summer,” he remarked. At the moment, Joe Geldhart is in an enviable position. At Leeds United, the 22-year-old plays very little in the league. It surprises me that he stayed in Leeds this summer.
“Prior to the current campaign, teams like Ipswich Town shown interest in him. He played 18 games and only managed three goals while on loan at Championship Sunderland the previous season.
It surprises me that he and his advisors haven’t decided where to relocate. He has to play football, but the years are passing and he isn’t receiving any playing time.
When the Championship transfer window opens, his advisors will undoubtedly be examining the situation and deciding whether to try to get him out on loan or permanently if he isn’t getting playing time.

It was likely Leeds’ intention for Gelhardt to go on deadline day, if not on loan, following their August 30 story in the Yorkshire Evening Post by Graham Smyth suggesting that a late attacking acquisition may make it easier for him to depart.
Although Hungarian international Roland Sallia from Freiberg was strongly linked to the Whites [HITC, August 29], negotiations finally broke down without a settlement.
However, it appears that the former Wigan forward has been retained—and perhaps not for the first time—as backup for an emergency that might never materialize.
Two seasons ago, Gelhardt played as much for the Whites as he has since signing a new long-term contract two years ago on his half-season loan at Sunderland.
Though Farke is merely the most recent manager to give him menial minutes off the bench at best, managers have rarely had anything negative to say about him.
Around the time of the new deal, Jesse Marsch hyped up Gelhardt’s future but rarely followed through on his statements. As a result, the early promise the young man shown has given way to frustration and a stopped progress.
It is unlikely that Farke will turn to Mateo Joseph, Joel Piroe, or Patrick Bamford at this point, thus action has to be taken as quickly as possible.
Although it still appears that Leeds will have difficulty moving Bamford, his time has undoubtedly come and gone because arrangements were made in the summer to bring in another forward rather than switch to Gelhardt [Daily Mail, August 24].
Transfer negotiations have begun following the Whites’ “serious” bid, according to additional Leeds United reports.
