Crash on I-80 leaves one dead, closes westbound lanes

SALT LAKE CITY: While driving east on I-80, a BMW sedan’s driver lost control of the car for an unidentified reason. The vehicle began to roll as it crossed the median. The event happened on July 23 at approximately 8:30 p.m.

The car caught fire as it crossed the median. Not long after the BMW crossed the median, three of its occupants were ejected.

As all of this was happening, a Ford Explorer heading west came to a complete stop and the BMW slammed right into the front of the Explorer. Both cars were soon completely consumed by the BMW’s flames.

The Explorer’s occupants managed to get out of the car swiftly and securely. The lone person inside the BMW who wasn’t ejected died from their wounds.

The collision happened roughly one mile to the east of Route 312. Although there is a one to two mile backlog of westbound traffic, it is flowing slowly on the shoulder up to Interstate 684.

The extent of the injuries sustained by the drivers of both cars, who were taken to Danbury Hospital, is yet unknown.

As the traffic came to a standstill after the two-vehicle collision, a tanker truck traveling west on I-84 drove off the road at I-684. The driver of the truck was unharmed.
